Paul McCartney's first collection of originals since 2007's slightly mournful Memory Almost Full finds him in one of the best shapes of his life. The title track – driven by hand-claps – would have fitted nicely on Revolver or Sgt Pepper's. Harpsichords and horns jolly the song along nicely. The opening track, Save Us, builds on the dynamic behind McCartney's old Band on the Run and has a touch of Live and Let Die about it before finding itself. Again, it's a buoyant affair and like so much here is lyrically simple. Everybody Out There keeps the party swinging. There is the odd nod back to McCartney's other band, but it's Hamburg-era Beatles he references on On My Way to Work. But that was then and New is McCartney's now. On this evidence, there's a bright future ahead of him.
