Everyone’s a star these days, but they broke the mould when Shaun Ryder came along. You know the backstory by now: as the singer/ lyricist in Happy Mondays, Ryder was compared to no less than WB Yeats by Factory Records founder Tony Wilson.
When Happy Mondays floundered, along came Black Grape, and when that band split up Ryder went from pillar to post – Daily Sportcolumnist, bit-part actor, I 'm a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!contestant, autobiographer (his Twisting My Melonbook is a hoot) – all the while grappling with and beating a hard-drug habit.
So Ryder’s a survivor, one with no small level of charm. He is, however, notoriously disorganised, so whether this gig will be a triumph or a letdown is in Ryder’s hands.
