Oklahoma-born, Manhattan- based Annie Clark has been around long enough by this stage (she's served time with Polyphonic Spree and Sufjan Stevens) to know what's what. Taking her stage name as a reference to the medical centre where Welsh poet Dylan Thomas died, Clark has, from her 2007 debut album, Marry Me, to her recently released Strange Mercy, managed to couple together a non-threatening voice with lyrics that more than hint at themes of sex, violence, depression and general disruptiveness.

Whatever dysfunctions Clark alludes to, however, are blindsided by music that is beautifully arranged and songs that arrive wrapped in varying shades of Kate Bush and Leslie Feist. Time to get seriously impressed.
