They’re both elder statesmen who started out in basic r’n’b bands in satellite towns, but who took different career paths: Van Morrison has, throughout the past four decades, carved out a singular but not always bullet-proof career. The end of next month sees the release of a new album, but whether Morrison would prefer to deliver a best-known-songs set – rather than filter songs from the new record through the show – is anyone’s guess.
Tom Jones, on the other hand, left his soul/r’n’b roots behind him to chase the Las Vegas dream, so has had to slog harder for critical approval. Between the pair
of them there are enough recognizable songs to last well into the night, so even if you’re a casual observer you’re bound to be swayed.
NB: One of the acts in the line-up, Bobby Womack, will now not be performing; his place on the bill has been taken by Irish blues performer Don Baker, whose special guest is Sinéad O’Connor.
