Almost 20 years on the go now, and still Glasgow's Mogwai (named after the furry cute/nasty creatures in Gremlins) continue to push out the post-rock (a term the band dislike) boat. Or is it envelope? Mogwai's new album, Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will, carries on the work of a group that fears not the discomfort of people denied the chance to sing along to lyric-based melodies. Rather, the band feature instrumentals that shift, apparently effortlessly, from serene soundscapes to brain-blistering noise. There's no denying the beauty of the former and the brutality of the latter – each seems to indicate the band's uncompromising, frequently dynamic nature.
Frankly, ear plugs at the ready or not, we wouldn’t want it any other way.
