This is a welcome recital from one of the finest and most thoughtful lyric baritones before the public today. Keenlyside has a voice reminiscent of the late great Robert Merrill, and he uses it here with discrimination and sensitivity in a compilation of some of the great baritone arias from 19th-century opera. His voice is not large, which can reduce his impact in the opera house, but his great range of vocal colours, coupled with his dramatic insight into the words of the arias, makes him an ideal recording artist. The repertoire in this recital ranges from Bellini to Wagner, and Keenlyside brings specific vocal and dramatic insights to each item; the combination makes for enthralling listening. His accompanying notes to the disc are also well worth reading for their insight and humility. www.sony.com COLMAN MORRISSEY
