Picasso etching in Simon's charity sale

The Simon Community is hoping to raise around £20,000 from an art sale to be held next Saturday at Leopardstown Racecourse. Judging from the line-up of pictures on offer this will be a better charity art auction than most and it could be a good opportunity to pick up some interesting work.

There's a small Picasso etching, a strong etching of Samuel Beckett by Jack Coughlan, an early Graham Knuttell work of colourful fish, a typical Brian Bourke piece of a woman's head and an etching by Patrick Pye. Other Irish artists represented include Janine Davidson, Paul Francis and Rowel Friers. The most unusual lot is an objet trouve donated by Albert Reynolds. This is actually a can of dog food, which will be displayed as modern art, and which comes with a letter from the former Taoiseach, suggesting that it should be exhibited as a tableau vivant, with a dog tucking in. With or without the dog, it's expected to make over £200.

Viewing starts this morning at the Oriel Gallery, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and continues throughout next week, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
