Reviewing Gerald Simpson's career is a bit like reviewing the history of dance music itself. The Manchester native (and 808 State co-founder) has been a seminal figure since Voodoo Raycame falling from the sky back in 1988. It's a testament to that tune's timeless allure that it still remains in a class of its own when it comes swooping out of the speakers in 2011. But Simpson has not hit the rave nostalgia circuit like some of his peers from back in the day and still produces groundbreaking sounds.
His back-catalogue contains gems such as the gloriously textured
Black Secret Technologyalbum and the rich, soulful electronic wash of the
To All The Things What They Needset, while recent albums such as
Proto Acidand
Tronic Jazzwere loaded with blazing sounds. Tonight's live set has been roadtested successfully in venues including Fabric (London) and Panorama Bar (Berlin).
