Positive Ageing Week runs all this week, until October 2nd.
The week's events are intended to show that older people have a vital role to play in modern Ireland. Events throughout the country will include poetry readings, art exhibitions, health promotion talks, flower arranging, singing, afternoon tea parties, gardening, bowls, keep-fit sessions, stress-busting for carers and many other activities.
National events include:
Today: Senator Mary O'Rourke launches the Schools Photobank and Essay Competition, Chester Beatty Library, Dublin Castle, noon; grandparenting seminar, Chester Beatty Library, Dublin Castle, 10 a.m. to noon; information day on issues affecting older people, Galway People's Resource Centre (runs today-Fri); well-being and the older person, Age Action West (runs today-Fri)
Tomorrow: DCU Third Age and Belfast U3A celebrate in Belfast, 10.30 a.m. to 1 p.m.; tours of Leinster House (run tomorrow-Thu)
Thursday: Launch of age discrimination phone-in, Dublin; stress-busting for carers seminar, Chester Beatty library, Dublin Castle, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; positive ageing conference given by Ivor Callely, Minister of State, Department of Health
Friday: UN International Day of Older Persons phone-in, Age Action offices. Freephone: 1800 317 417 (for one month); launch of North Dublin Regional Network
Saturday: Information and coffee morning, Age Action Shops,
Camden St, Dún Laoghaire, Galway, Castlebar
