It wouldn't be quite the same at Cannes without a few tantrums, and first off the mark this year is petulant Japanese director Kohei Oguri. He agreed to show his film, The Forgotten Forest, in the official festival sidebar, Un Certain Regard, but it will now be screened in the unofficial but equally prestigious sidebar, the Director's Fortnight.

When Oguri learned that another Japanese movie, Masahiro Kobayashi's Bashing, had been selected to compete for the Palme d'Or, he withdrew his film from Un Certain Regard, even though established directors such as François Ozon and Kim Ki-duk have agreed to show their new films in that sidebar, which has its own award, presented by a jury chaired this year by Sideways director Alexander Payne.

A spokesman for the Director's Fortnight welcomed the opportunity to show Oguri's film, saying: "He was vexed, so he offered his film to us, and we're delighted to have it in our line-up."
