I loved Carrie's War (Penguin, £6.99 in UK) for a number of reasons. This book has mystery and excitement, and Nina Baldwin's flashback style of writing really brings the story to life. The story, set in the 1940s, is about a girl, Carrie, and her brother, Nick, who are evacuated from London and their parents to a small village in Wales during the war. The book is about the adventures they had while away from home. It also shows how people lived and the scarcity of money back in those days.
