Tom Dunne's Essential Selection Vol 1
RMG Chart
****
Tom Dunne has cherrypicked the hot indie tracks of 2007 and has chosen The Editors to kick off this two-CD selection featuring the cream of today's guitar janglers. Tracks by Bloc Party, Kings of Leon, Interpol, The Gossip, Biffy Clyro and The Enemy make up the bulk of CD 1, and it's nice that Dunne has given a nod to his colleague Paul McLoone by including a new one from The Undertones. On CD 2, Dunne seems to morph into Donal Dineen, with a selection that leans heavily towards the dance-electro end of the spectrum. Tunes by UNKLE, Paul Hartnoll, LCD Soundsystem and Caribou have enough wooziness to keep everyone's head wobbling along into the early hours, while the closing brace of folkie songs by Damien Rice and Fionn Regan should send us contentedly to our beds. www.rmgchart.ie Kevin Courtney

THE WEDDING PRESENT
Ye Ye (Best of the RCA Years)
Sony/BMG
***
The Wedding Present never got what they deserved. The Leeds four-piece had the gifted David Gedge fronting them but seemed to confuse critics, possibly because their Velvet Underground-meets-Gang of Four sound was just a bit too complex to take. With the band resurgent again - last seen playing their classic George Best album in its entirety - this collection from their RCA years showcases material from the underrated Bizarro and Sea Monsters albums. It's no surprise that the opener, Kennedy, still sounds like it was recorded yesterday, Dare is arguably still their best song, and Dalliance sounds like it gave Nirvana some ideas. It's well worth getting reacquainted with the band - and there should be a new studio album available soon. www.scopitones.co.uk
