Dr Siobhán Garrigan, associate professor of liturgical studies and associate dean for chapel at Yale University, curates an exhibition that encourages visitors “to explore the ways
in which they, their lives, and the places they inhabit are sacred”.
But the show doesn’t have its head in the clouds. It
takes as its starting point
the parlous state of contemporary Ireland in the wake of the consumerism and contradictions that came with the Celtic Tiger and the abuse scandals that have alienated many people from the Catholic Church. As a result, Garrigan says, most people are alienated from traditional senses of the sacred in their lives.
Sacred aims to reintroduce the sacred with a culinary installation by Maison Djeribi; elemental paintings by Bernadette Kiely; slow-motion dance videos by David Michalek (pictured); Aileen Lambert’s work on “breath”; and ceramics by Katherine West.
Tomorrow at 2pm, Garrigan will guide an informal discussion on the theme. Everyone is welcome.
