An amiable ramble through styles and periods, such as this recital by Patrick Zuk (piano) and Seamus Ludden (baritone) is rarely as satisfying as two or three cohesive groups of songs; but this was one of the more successful ones of its kind.
Seamus Ludden has the relaxed presence and knack with chatty introductions to carry this sort of thing off - for 40 minutes anyway. His voice had a pleasantly warm, even sound in its lower and middle registers, though tone got thinner towards the top.
He has an intelligent appreciation of text and music, and especially in Schubert's Litanei auf das Fest Allerseelen produced some beautifully longlimbed phrasing, poised rhythm and apt variations in colour.
Patrick Zuk's playing was shapely, but sometimes lacked finesse with detail - over-pedalled, cluttered and dragging in Schubert's Die Forelle, for example.
