COLD WAR KIDS
Something Is Not Right with Me ***
Downtown
Something's not right with singer Nathan Willett. He certainly says so enough times in this song, taken from the band's forthcoming album. I'm not a doctor, but I'd put it down to the time he spent touring with White Stripes, whose influence is writ large all over this track. www.coldwarkids.com
BOB DYLAN
Dreamin' of You ****
Columbia
"I'm dreamin' of you/it's all that I do/and it's drivin' me insane," growls Dylan, on this previously unreleased outtake from 1997's Time Out of Mind. As usual, I haven't the faintest idea what most of this is about. But I'll see him in anything, so I'll stand in line.
KEANE
Spiralling **
Island
We can assume that Tom Chaplin & co's focus groups are reporting that the ship has sailed on the market for bedwetting piano ballads, because Keane have here retooled themselves as a sort of Mystery Jets-style 1980s office party act. You do have to admire their neck.
SNOW PATROL
Take Back the City **
Polydor
One band sticking to their guns are Belfast's Snow Patrol. It was bland, epic numbers that got them where they are today, and it is with bland, epic numbers that they will stick.
ESTELLE FEATURING CEE-LO
Pretty Please (Love Me) ****
Atlantic
Classy retro soul number from a British singer who's on something of a roll. As was the case with Kanye West's guest spot on Estelle's American Boysingle, the cameo from Gnarls Barkley's Cee-Lo here is entirely perfunctory. Estelle herself is the star turn.
