SHARON JONES & THE DAP KINGS 100 Days, 100 Nights Daptone ****
Now that The Dap Kings have gotten our attention for acting as Mark Ronson's house band on his Versionalbum and for their contributions to Amy Winehouse's Back to Black, the time is right for them to swing back into action with the soul diva's diva.
A Georgia native and former prison officer at Sing Sing, Jones is a soul belter reminiscent of Marva Whitney, Fontella Bass and Betty LaVette. Place this voice alongside the dusty grooves of The Dap Kings and you've an ensemble who know just how raw, classic soul should sound. Every note of the title track, Let Them Knockand the classic Humble Metell of a band happy to find new ways of reworking and retailoring the standard poses and plays. And in Jones they're blessed to have a singer who puts any idea of retro stylings in the bin. Make no mistake about it: she's the real deal. www.myspace.com/ sharonjonesandthedapkings JIM CARROLL
