Jocelyn Clarke reviews this week's soundtrack music release
MARK ISHAM
Pride and Glory
Colosseum
Mark Isham's score for Pride And Gloryis not the award-winning composer's finest. It is, nevertheless, one of his most efficient, if uninspired, which may have a lot to do with the critically unloved, ho-hum cop drama.
There are signature Isham moments that recall his superb recent scores for Crash, Reservation Roadand In the Valley of Elah, whose bold instrumental colours and sinuous polyrhythms - the warm Spanish guitar of Funeral, the elegiac strings of Suicide, the brooding electronica of Protest -serve mostly to emphasise the overall score's lack of significant theme or urgent drama.
Although it moves from cue to cue without any particular necessity or drive, Isham is such a dynamic composer that Pride and Glorysounds better than it should.
