While over the last decade Clint Eastwood has enjoyed a resurgence in his directorial career, he is also experiencing the first flush of a new career as a film composer, notably with Mystic River, Million Dollar Babyand Flags of Our Fathers. Changelingis his fourth solo film score in as many years (he composed Unforgivenand Absolute Power, among others with longtime orchestrator Leonard Niehaus) and proves his darkest and most challenging yet. Combining elegiac jazz, romantic folk and austere post- minimalism with simple themes, minor chords and spare orchestration, Eastwood gradually builds a pervasive atmosphere of psychological dread and emotional claustrophobia to create a brooding para-music of unrelenting tension and anxiety.
