Debra Granik's Down To The Bone examines the pressures of balancing a drug habit and raising a family in small town America, while Jonathan Caouette's beautiful and spellbinding musical docudrama Tarnation, paints an altogether more psychedelic picture of contemporary America.

Drugs are at the centre of quite a different film from these two, Maria Full of Grace, the compelling drama from Joshua Marston. Scrubs star Zach Braff has had critical plaudits heaped upon Garden State, his feature film début as a writer/director.

Mean Creek is a revenge-gone-wrong indie from Jacob Aaron Estes and Nicole Kassel's The Woodsman features a stand-out performance from Kevin Bacon as a paedophile on parole. The perennially outrageous Gregg Araki is back with another tale of dysfunction in Mysterious Skin, while Todd Solondz's Palindromes, you will be unsurprised to hear, is deeply, weirdly unsettling.
