VARIOUS Bugged Out Classics New State ****

The Bugged Out club night began in Manchester in 1994 as an offshoot of the now-defunct Jockey Slut magazine, but quickly took on a life of its own as a home away from home for rough-and-tumble techno, twisted electronic music and various interesting sides of the house equation. This three-CD set gathers together a huge clatter of the boom tunes and floorfillers from the club's lengthy reign in Manchester and, more recently, London. What all the selections here have in common are commendable quantities of energy, innovation, spunk and sparkle. From the evergreen purr and punch of Green Velvet's Flash and Slam's Positive Education to the new-school electro-indie machinations of Simian Mobile Disco, Justice and Claude VonStroke, this hugely enjoyable rave-up covers all possible bases. www.buggedout.net JIM CARROLL
