My Room in the Trees
Badman***
Karen and Dan Peris and Mike Bitts may have been making delicate, intricate folk music for yonks, but most of their run has been very much under the radar. A pity, as there's certainly an audience for such beautifully unshowy sounds. Originally released in the US a year ago, their 11th full-length album doesn't veer too far from the established acoustic template, with Karen Peris's soft, evocative voice guiding these songs past unhurried, unadorned backdrops where less is definitely more. The beauty is in the unexpected punch and pitch of songs such as Spring, with its lowly slung echoes of piano and guitars, and Peris's Natalie Merchant- like voice luring you in. While there's little here that wouldn't have been out of place on previous albums, My Room in the Treesstill casts a spell.
