The National Theatre and RT╔ have announced an initiative to develop new writing for stage, television and radio. The aim of the three-year project is to identify new writers and commission plays that have the potential to translate to a broadcast medium. The brainchild of Richard Wakely, the Abbey's managing director, and Mary Callery, RT╔'s commissioning editor of drama, the project builds on the relationship between the two institutions, which has already been seen in the recent broadcast of Marina Carr's play By The Bog Of Cats. Tom Murphy's Bailegangaire will be broadcast next month. It will be directed by the playwright himself in the Abbey's forthcoming Murphy season, part of next month's Dublin Theatre Festival.
