As someone who is consciously guilty of the "yawning gap" Joan Doherty, November 30th, I feel I owe Ms Doherty an explanation. The reason I and many like me leave a gap between cars is because it is a safe and responsible thing to do. With insurance so costly, I shudder at commuters who insist on crawling along six inches behind me. Also, with a gap in front, acceleration and braking can be done much more smoothly, making the commute more economical and less stressful. It's drivers who strive to be six inches in front who are selfish.

On these dark mornings and dark evenings, I am sick and tired of being blinded by car brake lights, caused by rush-hour drivers who insist on sitting in traffic with their foot on the brake rather than using their handbrake.
