MICHAEL MCHALE (PIANO), PAUL WHELAN (BARITONE), UO/KENNETH MONTGOMERY Ulster Hall, Belfast Fri 7.45pm £8-£20 048-90334455The refurbished Ulster Hall formally re-opens its doors on Belfast's Bedford Street this Friday with a concert by the Ulster Orchestra under its principal conductor, Kenneth Montgomery. The celebratory programme presses any number of buttons.
There’s a new work, Big Daddy Motorhead, by the orchestra’s associate composer, Brian Irvine.
There's an apposite Beethoven overture, The Consecration of the House, Rachmaninov's Paganini Rhapsody(with Michael McHale as the piano soloist), and Stanford's Songs of the Fleet(with baritone Paul Whelan). And Stravinskys Firebird Suitereplaces the planned organ works involving Belfast's city organist Colm Carey – the instrument will not be ready in time for the concert. If all else goes well, of course, the hall, which already has the most acclaimed acoustic for orchestral music in Ireland, will be the star of the show.
