CULTURE

Discotekken Amphibious Party

Sugar Club Dublin 6pm €20/€10 thesugarclub.com

A Culture Night excursion with a difference as Discotekken brings a second World War amphibious vehicle around some of Dublin's sites and scenes. Think the Viking Splash tours without the awful commentary and stupid hats. Afterwards, the vehicle pulls up at the Sugar Club for a night featuring Smokin' Ivo's BBQ, a screening of Jaws and the DIP DJs spinning disco, 1980s boogie and house.

TECHNO

Bastardo Electrico

The Pav Cork 11pm €12/€10 thepavcork.com

Ireland’s longest techno club night marks its 13th birthday in style with a visit from Sunil Sharpe. The Dublin DJ and producer has been enjoying some well-earned attention of late and is as likely to be found spinning in clubs around Europe as in Ireland, while he continues to forge ahead with releases on labels such as Blawan and Pariah’s Sheworks and Brothers. Support from Bastardo founder Jamie Behan.

FOLK FESTIVAL

Spirit of Folk 2015

Dunderry Park, Navan, Co Meath 6pm €70/€50 spiritoffolk.com Also Sat/Sun, Meath

Pitched as the last festival of the summer, Spirit of Folk celebrates its fifth year with another family-friendly event featuring music (including Mick Flannery, Inni-K, Moxie, Rhob Cunningham, Dr Millar, Barry McCormack, Elephant and Saint Sister), poetry, storytelling, traditional crafts, and what the organisers describe as “ancient spiritual practices”.

TRANCE

Edition 1.1

Lift Derry 9pm £7/£5 liftnightclub.com

Craig Connelly comes to town for Edition 1.1’s opening blast in Derry. The Manchester-based DJ and producer has enjoyed one hit after another in recent times. Throw in remixes for bigwigs such as Ferry Corsten, John O’Callaghan and others and a hectic touring schedule and it’s clear Connelly is a spinner with a bright future. Support from Dubliner Paul Webster, another DJ on the rise with more US dates ahead after a summer of Ibiza standouts.

BEYOND GENRE

This Is How We Fly

Firkin Crane, Cork (Fri); Pepper Canister Church, Dublin (Sat); Lyric Theatre, Belfast (Mon); thisishowwefly.net.

This is How We Fly take the cross-genre biscuit – a quartet of gifted musicians who have converged on an art that passes all definition. Trailblazing trad fiddler Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh and intrepid jazz multi- instrumentalist Seán Mac Erlaine are the Irish side of the story; percussive dancer Nic Gareiss is from Michigan and percussionist Petter Berndalen is from Stockholm. Descriptions are futile. See them live.
