The Garda is due to send a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) following its investigation into the fatal stabbing of a 34-year-old man in Finglas last June, an inquest has heard.

At a sitting of Dublin District Coroner’s Court on Monday, coroner Clare Keane recorded Mark Carroll’s medical cause of death, per a postmortem carried out following his death on June 9th, 2024, as “stab wound”.

Det Insp Darragh Kenny, the senior investigating officer in the case of the Finglas native and father of two’s stabbing, said that a file on the Garda investigation is due to be transferred to the DPP’s office “in short course”. A six-month adjournment of the case was granted by the coroner.

Kevin Carroll, the deceased’s father, was present in court to give brief evidence of identifying his late son’s body to gardaí. In a deposition, he said he identified the body to Det Gda Brendan O’Hora on June 10th at the Dublin City Mortuary in Whitehall.

In a separate case that came before the court, Dr Keane recorded the medical cause of death of a 73-year-old civilian worker who fell from a mast at Garda Headquarters as “multiple traumatic injuries”.

John Jack Hurley, late of Meelick, Co Clare, died on January 26th, 2024, following the incident at the Phoenix Park complex. According to his death notice, he worked for Clancy & Partners Steeple Jacks, a firm based in Co Limerick.

In a deposition read on to the court record, Norman Walsh said he was working with Mr Hurley on the day he fell from the mast at Garda Headquarters. Mr Walsh, who said he knew Mr Hurley for 10 years, identified the deceased’s body to gardaí following the incident, the court heard.

Brian Morris, a Health and Safety Authority official investigating the case, asked the coroner for a six-month adjournment of the case. The investigation is ongoing, he told the court.

Niamh Ó Donnabháin represented Mr Hurley’s family in court, while Kate Ahern appeared for the deceased man’s partner.
