Adult acne: Six treatments that really hit the spot

Tried and tested: When spots appear it’s time to bring in the big guns. Here are some that actually work

I asked friends for their recommendations for treating adult acne and Acnecide 5% w/w gel (€14.99, from Boots) came back top of the list. This topical gel includes benzoyl peroxide and it even manages to deal with cystic acne lumps that live deep down under the skin. It can be applied to the entire problem area, or only on each blemish. Moisturiser is recommended after application, as due to the strength of the peroxide, the gel can be drying.

A good friend of mine swears by Vichy Normaderm Deep Cleansing Purifying Gel (€13.50, from Cara Pharmacy). Enriched with salicylic and glycolic acid, this cleanser eliminates excess sebum, which eventually leads to congestion and spots. It is gentle enough for temperamental skin, but strong enough to really make a difference.

Origins Clear Improvement active charcoal pore clearing mask (€30, from Debenhams) is a great way to keep the skin clear. Charcoal acts like a magnet to draw out the skin's impurities. Use once or twice a week and press a warm, moist towel to the face before application to open pores up.

La Roche-Posay Effaclar K (€19.99, from Boots) is the product I currently reach for when my skin flairs up. It's not at all drying or harsh, so can be applied all over the area while working its magic to reduce inflammation. Spots tend to clear up in a day or two, but I would recommend using it regularly to avoid congestion in the first place.

Murad Blemish Control Spot Treatment (€9.99, from Littlewoods Ireland) contains sulphur, zinc oxide and salicylic acid, making it ideal for an on-the-spot (pardon the pun) emergency zap. It quickly reduces inflammation and redness and soothes at the same time. One for the handbag.

I use Skinceuticals Blemish and Age Cleansing Gel every night to keep spots at bay. It is designed for ageing skin that's prone to blemishes (some of us are so blessed). The key ingredients – LHA, glycolic and salicylic acid – exfoliate and brighten the skin, while encouraging skin renewal that improves the appearance of fine lines. Double whammy.
