It's always out there, one of those things that you hear about happening to a friend of a friend, not too close thank God. But the way things are going it's bound to touch each and every one of us some day. That day was two months ago for me when my best friend rang me - not for the usual gossipy chat - but to ask if I was sitting down. She then dropped the bombshell that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer, and all of a sudden my safe cocoon was shattered.

Even though breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer worldwide, with 2,000 cases in Ireland alone each year, there is some light at the end of the tunnel. Mortality rates are declining due to early diagnosis and more effective treatment. How to make a difference? Twelve years ago, the Pink ribbon campaign was launched in Ireland to highlight and help the cause, so this is your chance to make a difference and help find a cure.

Hats off to Estée Lauder, who have played a leading role in this area, and have some special "pinks" to get you in the mood. The Jewelled Compact will tell the world of your commitment when you powder your nose. It's €75, €15 of which is donated to Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF). Or how about Crystal Gloss in Evelyn Pink, sheer shimmery pink, €19.50, of which €7 will be donated.

Peter Mark has come up with a clever idea that would be a top gift. Its Gift Card is in a special pink for the month that's in it and it will donate 10 per cent of whatever you choose to spend. How's that for a good hair day? And to top it all off how about a bracelet with some charms to start you off? €20 for the sale of each €159 bracelet will go to the Marie Keating Foundation. Check out www.charming.ie for your nearest stockist. There is something there for everyone and every price range. So go to it, you have only until the end of the month.
