where's the beef?
Next week is National Organic Week, and, with Hugo Arnold urging us to taste the difference, it's worth tracking down local organic beef. Joe Condon and his New York-born wife, Eileen, have been farming organically since 1997 on their hill farm on the slopes of the Knockmealdown Mountains, in south Co Tipperary. "We have a couple of thousand acres of hillside, and Galloways, the breed of cattle we have, are extensive grazers, so their meat has a good proportion of 'healthy' omega-3 and -6 fats," Eileen says. Their beef, available at www.omegabeefdirect.ie, costs €95, including delivery, for about 4.5kg in a mix of steaks, burgers, mince and stir-fry strips. If you want to try it before committing to a box, you can get it from Condons at the new farmers' market at the Red Stables in St Anne's Park, Dublin 3, on Saturdays (10am-4pm); Dungarvan farmers' market, every Thursday (9am-2pm); and Waterford farmers' market, on the second Sunday of every month (9.30am-2pm).
