Every year, Sligo-based artist Brigit Beemster chooses a theme for her ceramic works, and this year she has zoned in on philosophy and ethics. Her new pieces address heavy questions such as "why does God make bad people?" (asked by a friend's five-year-old-daughter), the potentially evil applications of scientific discoveries and how corruption and materialism worsen climate change.
But it's not all doom and woe. Beemster brings an air of levity to her thought-provoking pieces with a quirky style and wry observations. Shown here is Non-defeatist, which lines up David Hume, Einstein and Aristotle as hearing, seeing and speaking no evil, and questions the impact of knowledge. Her latest exhibition opens on Thursday at Red Aesthetic on Rose Inn Street in Kilkenny, and runs until September 4th. For details, see www.redaesthetic.com or call Michelle O'Connell at 056-7765526.
