A lecture, Georgian Style and Splendour: Fashionable Dress in the 18th Century, will be given at 2pm today by art and fashion historian Sara Donaldson, hosted by the Irish Georgian Society. Donaldson, who is an authority on costume in art and who did the research, introduction and footnotes for the National Gallery's 2008 Diary on that subject, will talk about costumes, jewellery, footwear and hairstyles worn by fashion-conscious men, women and children in the l8th century.

The Georgian love of colour ranged from the flamboyance of the Rococo era to the more restrained neo classical period and the lecture will be amply illustrated throughout. The lecture is open to the public, free of charge, and will take place at the RIAI, 8 Merrion Square, one of a series of events today as part of Merrion Square Open Day.
