The former AIB sports grounds on College Drive, Terenure, Dublin 6W is to be turned into a scheme of over 160 homes, despite widespread local objection.

An Bord Pleanála ruled in favour of the proposed scheme which will be located beside Saint Pius church. It granted Jackie Greene Construction planning permission with 23 conditions.

The development will involve the demolition of the existing derelict sports clubhouse to build a mix of three, four and five-bedroom houses, maisonettes, duplex units and 99 apartments ranging from single storey to three-storey plus penthouse block.

Located in a mature residential area, the scheme will also include an office and crèche. Over 20 of the units will be given over to sheltered accommodation, which will include a dayroom.

Planning permission was originally granted by South Dublin County Council but appealed by 17 parties.

There was also a first party appeal by Jackie Greene Construction against a number of conditions of planning permission.

Local concerns included overlooking and overshadowing by the development, increased traffic congestion - already a problem with four schools in the vicinity - increased parking problems and a history of flooding on the site.

In its decision, An Bord Pleanála ruled that the development is acceptable in terms of traffic safety, convenience and public health.
