DESPITE a forecast of rain it turned out to be a lovely summer's evening for this year's Irish Times/IAVI tennis tournament at Lansdowne Tennis Club where 12 teams battled it out for the Irish TimesPerpetual Trophy. Some teams were there for the fun, but others definitely turned up with an agenda and were in it to win.

Ultimately, it was game, set and match to Hooke & MacDonald who scooped the overall prize for the second year running against arch rivals Sherry FitzGerald, who have won six times since the tournament began. Hooke and MacDonald also won in 2004.

The Hooke and MacDonald line-up was Ken MacDonald, David Cantwell, Maeve Cantwell and Sheelagh Lacy while the Sherry FitzGerald team was made up of seasoned player Simon Ensor and Colin Smyth along with Wendy Horan and Fional Mulvey

Not that it was all plain sailing for victors Hooke and MacDonald. In the semi-final between Hooke and MacDonald and Independent Valuations, Hooke and MacDonald ladies won 4-1 but the Independent Valuations men thrashed Hooke MacDonald 4-1.

A deciding mixed doubles was played which saw Hooke MacDonald go through to the final.

The second semi-final was more decisive between Sherry FitzGerald and Knight Frank.

The Sherry FitzGerald ladies won 4-1 and the Sherry FitzGerald men triumphed 4-1.

Hooke and MacDonald played Sherry FitzGerald in the final which saw their ladies team win 6-2 and the men win 7-5.

The Irish Timesentered a team in the tournament. Other teams included Daphne L Kaye, DTZ Sherry FitzGerald, Savills, McGinley, Farrelly OConnor and the Law Society.
