ShoparoundIf it's custom-made kitchens in reclaimed wood, salvaged telephone boxes or funky mosaic and stained glass mirrors you're after then Bang at the Salvage Shop in Waterford is the place for you.
Father-and-son team Sean and Jim Corcoran's quirky salvage business is based on a three-acre site on the Airport Road in Waterford.
Also on site is a 929sq m (10,000sq ft) building comprising workshops and showrooms dominated by a large open fire which burns all year round. From here Sean designs, manufactures and sells his Bang range of interior products. Many are made from recycled materials such as reclaimed pitch pine, rustic yellow pine, old slate, stone, glass and mirror.
There are also a number of resident artists based on site.
New to the range is a smart and slightly curvy Simplicity fireplace made with marble surround and slate insert (€1,050). An eye-catching kitchen table made from Indian slate and Douglas fir called the blacktop table costs €1,600.
Bang's chunky and funky kitchen designs usually comprise freestanding items such as islands, larders, sink units, storage units and dressers.
A kitchen fit-out with four items can cost as little as €2,500 and go up to around €20,000.
Chairs range in price from €150 to €1,500. The simple famine chair in pitch pine is a simple country-style chair (€265). The rocket chair is altogether more elaborate. Made from yellow pine and painted silver it's a must for failed astronauts (€1,500).
Wonderfully curious mirrors made from pitch pine, old slate and mosaics of mirror, beads, glass and what ever else cost between €280 and €890.
If you're feeling nostalgic for pre-mobile phone days, pick up a green telephone box from the salvage shop for €800. Five 6ft chess pieces made from molded stone can be bought for €7,000. Otherwise the yard always has a great selection of recycled floors in stock. Choose from pitch pine, oak, stone, paving, terracotta, marble, granite or limestone.
