Chest €1,693.48 at Fired Earth (w1650mm x h91cm x d600mm): made from reclaimed teak, this chest is one of a number of pieces of furniture that can be seen at the new Fired Earth showroom in Dún Laoghaire. Most have a traditional English or Colonial style in dark or stained woods. This a chunky, heavy looking piece and might look best surrounded by light colours.

Milan chest €699 by Molloy Wood Crafts (w1306 x h855 x d460): solid birch chest in a vaguely Shaker-inspired style with tongue and groove side panelling. Although designed with bedroom use in mind, this could also work in a diningroom. This Irish company uses quality timber that is hand sanded to give a natural, slightly aged look.

Presotto chest €2,700 at Bob Bushell (w2400 x h793mm x d481mm): the two large top drawers have a sanded mirror front similar to frosted glass, but objects inside the drawer cannot be seen. The top, sides and eight smaller drawers are matt lacquer. It is available to order in 20 different colours.

Mirrored chest €3,368 by Knowles & Christou (w910mm x h1550mm x d510mm): available through interior designer Philippa Buckley, this chest has three drawers and is mirrored on all sides. There's something of the glamour of the 1930s about this piece and it could be used in almost any room. Buckley has used it on landings but it could also work in a bedroom, hall or living room. It is also available in patterned glass and can be custom made in larger sizes.
