AN ART auction designed to appeal to first-time buyers and collectors on a modest budget takes place in Ballsbridge tomorrow. De Veres is holding the second of its clearance auctions, following the success of its first such event in March. Some 300 hundred lots will go under the hammer with estimates ranging from €50 to about €2,000.
Many of the works offered are from de Veres’ storage facility, deceased estates and private clients and will be offered with nominal reserves. The auction offers an interesting mix of minor pieces by big names – including Martin Gale, Patrick Hennessy, Harry Kernoff, Graham Knuttel, Tony O’Malley, Markey Robinson and Mary Swanzy – and the work of scores of lesser-known artists.
There really is one for everybody in the audience – among them: a watercolour, Carrrickminesby Rosita Manahan (€200-€300); an oil-on-board, The Hawthorn Bush, Ballymascanlonby Pádraig Lynch (€400-€600); and an oil-on-board, Flower Selleron Grafton Street by Norman Teeling (€600-€900). Viewing starts this morning at 10am at the D4 Berkeley Hotel and de Veres staff will be on hand to advise any prospective bidders, discuss the provenance of any work and answer queries relating to the sale.
