Contents of the Montrose Hotel to be auctioned

The entire contents of The Montrose Hotel, formerly one of Dublin's best-known hotels, are to be sold at public auction next Saturday. The 158-bedroom hotel ceased trading in 2010 and auctioneers Matthews of Oldcastle, Co Meath has been retained to sell over 3,500 lots "with no reserve" including furniture, art and rugs. The auction will take place on the premises at noon on April 27th. It is believed that the hotel, located on the Stillorgan Road opposite UCD's Belfield campus, may be converted into student accommodation.

Auctioneer Damien Matthews said he had been instructed to "clear the place by the end of the month" and the auction was "an opportunity to acquire top quality items at a "knock-down price" including: Waterford crystal chandeliers, beds, lockers, mirrors, linen, mahogany conference tables, some 200 sets of curtains, rugs, room safes, some antique furniture and a selection of contemporary Irish art including oils, watercolours and prints.

He said the hotel, originally opened by PV Doyle in 1964, had been a victim of the “Celtic Tiger bust” .

Last month, Matthews auctioned off the former contents of the Morrison Hotel on Dublin’s Lower Ormond Quay which went into receivership in 2010.
