Dublin's first Olympic-sized swimming pool seems to be on the way as part of an entertainment complex to be developed off the M1 at Coolock Lane near Santry. The £80 million development will be the largest of its kind in Ireland or the UK. A British company, Stannifer, has just got planning permission for the Olympic Leisure Complex, a half million sq ft development to be located on a 38-acre site owned by the Corpo on Oscar Traynor Road. It is expected to cost £12 million and the developers are expecting it to be a loss leader. In return for providing the long-awaited 50-metre pool and a waterworld, the sweetener for Stannifer will be the revenue it will earn from a 16-screen cinema complex, almost 100,000 sq ft of retail space, a fitness centre, a 200-bedroom hotel, restaurants, cafes, a nightclub and other commercial facilities. Development work is likely to begin later this year.
