Gerry Slattery, president of the Irish Auctioneers & Valuers Institute, has reminded house buyers that gazumping is not confined to the new homes market. He says there will always be problems with the practice in the second-hand sector once prices are rising steeply. "God be with the days when a spit and a handshake sealed the deal, but then God was God and money was money . . . now seemingly money is God."
