This Scottish interior designer has won a huge following for her witty and vibrant approach to interior design during her stint as presenter of the BBC television programme, Home Front. This colourful book is full of her trademark low-cost instant fixes for drab homes, from painting the stairs in bright colours to using scaffolding in your kitchen as shelving units. The book's busy layout reflects Ms McKevitt's personal style, in that there's hardly a blandly tasteful square inch of white on any of the pages. She's also not afraid to tackle difficult, real rooms, so there is a funky update of a grim bathroom and a makeover of a flat.
It's a book that is likely to appeal to younger people interested in budget makeovers and learning the basics - on nearly every page there is a nuggets and "no no" section full of sensible advice. There are detailed instructions on how to make many of the items she uses, and they are graded in terms of difficulty - so novices won't be tempted, for example, to build a wavy wall (three stars) when painting electrical appliances (one star) is really more their speed.
