Kernel 32 is a group of young product and furniture designers who showed together last year at Designer's Block in London.

The show is an alternative gathering of design, run simultaneously to 100% Design.

One of Kernel 32's exhibits was this hanging light made from glass beer bottles inserted into a globe.

From a distance it's not immediately recognizable as such, and is a lighthearted use of a recyclable material, typical of the group's style - other pieces included lighting incorporated into Scaletrex sets attached to a wall. It is also available with green bottles, but only to order.

Niamh Barry is the lighting designer who made this arched light for The Ice Bar at The Four Seasons hotel in Ballsbridge. It can be produced to order and will cost about €1,500. A stainless steel "arm" with a mirrored finish curves to meet the opal acrylic shade.

Barry does a lot of work for commercial clients (another hotel where you can see her work is The Merrion). However, a number of her ready-to-buy pendant and wall lights are available from the new Galleria store on South William Street. For private commissions, she creates large-scale feature pieces. It may work out too expensive to contact her for small lighting, but if you've got a double height space and want something contemporary and exquisitely made, she's the one.

The Zettel light at Haus is made up of a frosted glass shade hidden behind printed sheets of Japanese paper that hang on clips from long spindle-like wire stems. Some pages are printed with Japanese script and other languages, others with small drawings.

Most often used above a dniing table, the light is soft through the paper. It is available in two sizes: 60 x 60 cm costs €695 and 120 x 120 cm costs €715.

A  modern classic, the Tizio desk light by Artemide is available from Bob Bushell and costs €275. It was designed by Richard Saper in 1980 and was one of the first low voltage halogen desk lamps to be produced.

Saper is an iconic designer who also designed for Alessi. Notice how the cable is connected at the base only. So with slender arms, how does the electricity reach the bulb? It travels safely through the metal through low voltage energy. Because it casts light from a decent height, which makes reading more comfortable, it is suitable for use as a bedside table.
