This vibrant family room is by Wyoming-based Grace Home Design. This is big-sky country and the decor of the room reflects that. Look closely and you will see a plains Indian shield, from Andy Warhol’s Cowboys and Indians series hanging on the wall. The sky-blue and white chevron-striped rug is inspired by the Navajo tribe. Urban Cowboy is a bed-and-breakfast whose first outpost was in hipster Brooklyn. The Victorian house was outfitted with distressed leather, turquoise, taxidermy, and hand-printed geometric wallpaper. Its second home is in Nashville, the music heartland and it replicates the same aesthetic. This penthouse in the residences at the Four Seasons in Austin, Texas, was designed by local decorating outfit Cravotta Studios. By commissioning the illuminated cowboy by neon artist Todd Sanders of Roadhouse Relics, the designers add light and humour to the space. The master bathroom of this cabin is by Atlanta-based Peace Design who worked with architect Faure Halvorsen and builders Highline Partners to create a contemporary bathroom with a rustic mood. This d-ring kitchen by John Mattingly of Chalet Architectural Design stands out from the crowd because of the oil-on-canvas on the far wall. The work is by artist Duke Beardsley, an aficionado of the American west. He spends as much time on horseback as possible, and his work blends traditional western iconography and modern art sensibilities. It is included in the Whitney Collection and Denver Art Museum. Find your inner frontiersman at Buffalo Collection, an etailer that stocks bison hides and can add Western details such as boot stitching to chairs. Most of their work is customised. This Falling Cowboys chair, which is made of bison leather, hand-cut fringing and real turquoise and silver fittings, features an interpretation of a block print, Cowboys on a Hunt, by sculptor Lawrence Tenney Stevens from the 1930s. If the American west feels too themepark for your sensibilities, then look east to Scandinavia and to the Scottish highlands for inspiration. This metro-tiled dining room features a large format photograph of one of Scotland’s long-haired highland cattle. Cow horns decorate the dining table.
