Best in class: Wooden floors

Situated on a flat parcel of land in the direct migratory path of the native elk herd in Jackson, Wyoming, US, is a home by Ward + Blake Architects that uses iron, cor-ten steel and lots of glass. Reclaimed douglas fir floors, indigenous to the Rocky Mountains, and milled using a rough circular saw, make the modern build feel like as if it’s been there for years.Photograph: Roger Wade wardblakearchitects.com

This isn’t technically a wooden floor but rather an engineered wood-based panel consisting of strands of wood which are bonded together with a synthetic resin. OSB (oriented strand board) has been used as a floor on this project in Northcote, Victoria, Australia, by Statkus Architecture. The floor was then sealed with a clear gloss varnish. This home office of a loft in Seattle’s Millennium Tower takes its inspiration from industrial spaces. The end-grain oak woodblock flooring, traditionally used on factory floors, actually spent 200 years underwater in Michigan’s great lakes. The idea was to add the feel of the old loft, says designer Polina Zaika of MusaDesign Interior Design.
