THE OWNER OF 34 Chelmsford Road wanted a look that reflected her relatively young years but didn't detract from the period of the house.

Interior designer Ger Smyth (087-2561141) kept the furniture classic but the textures, colours and accessories modern and sophisticated.

This black and taupe room has Ulf Moritz silk taupe wallpaper with tiny crystals. It is expensive at €180-€200 a roll, from Ger Smyth (gersmythinteriors.com), but is wider than a typical roll.

The sofas, which came from the Sofa Factory (01-4546877), have a raised white velvet pattern on a taupe background. The Ennis large two-seaters are covered in Designers Guild Ombrione fabric and cost €2,845 each.
