Every change they’ve made is considered and in keeping with the mood of the house.
But it wasn’t easy. In the middle of the kitchen renovation their builder disappeared to Barcelona for six weeks. Washing dishes in the bath because they still didn’t have a functioning kitchen sink when she was seven-and-a-half months pregnant was not fun, admits David’s wife Aideen.
But the results have been worth it. The box bay-windowed livingroom leads into the adjoining diningroom. French doors open onto a stepped deck offering a lovely sense of flow.
The star feature of their roomy galley-style kitchen is the L-shaped set of sliding doors that open up the corner of the room to the outdoors. The vanilla gloss units have black polished granite worktops.
The floor is limestone. An adjacent utility room keeps the kitchen devoid of noisy laundry.
On the first floor return is a large family bathroom and a single bedroom. There are two double bedrooms on the first floor – the main bedroom also has a box bay. All three still have their fireplaces.
The couple converted the attic, turning it into a lovely double bedroom with shower en suite that offers a great sense of escape from the hustle and bustle of family life.
A mature mimosa tree, still in shock from the harsh winter, is the main feature of the patio. There are numerous potted shrubs dotted around the rough hewn stone paving.
It’s low maintenance and very nicely finished. Pedestrian access onto a laneway leads to Leinster Road, handy if you need to go to the shops and very useful to the family during their renovations.
There are two doubles on the first floor. All the bedrooms still have their fireplaces.
Aideen and David and their two children, Tom, four-and-a-half and one-year-old Mark, are on the hunt for a new project – something they can put their stamp on it.
