Detached houses on corner sites in well-located suburbs were prime targets for small developers at the height of the boom. In 2005 there were ambitious plans for the house and large side garden at 69 Churchtown Road Upper that would have resulted in the house being demolished and replaced with an apartment block.
That didn’t happen – instead the rear garden was sectioned off and two houses built while the original house – a double-fronted 1950s build – was renovated and extended. The 2006 renovation was typical of its time, with top-of-the-range fixtures and finishes, from the walnut flooring at ground level to the high-end sanitaryware, and the kitchen extension is fitted with white gloss stone-topped units, stainless steel KitchenAid appliances and polished stone floor tiles.
The current owners bought in 2015 when Number 69 had been a rental for some time. Their own renovation project involved more practical elements, such as upgrading the insulation and installing a new heating system – bringing the Ber to a B3 – as well as reworking the layout downstairs and decorating throughout.
