It was love at first sight for Vera Keane and her husband when they came to No 8 Rathmore Terrace in Bray, almost two decades ago. Moving out of the city centre, the pair climbed the short flight of steps to the terrace, which sits above the Dargle River with views across to Bray Head and the Wicklow Mountains, and knew they wanted to live there before they had even opened the front door.
“In summer the whole place blazes with flowers,” says Vera, although in winter the house has a cosy charm too with an open fire in the front room. There is also a very sweet kitchen/dining room to the rear, which has lots of storage and countertop space, as well as being large enough for a dining table, plus room to move around while you’re baking and creating. This gives onto a sun room that in turn leads out to a sheltered suntrap of a back garden complete with garden shed and bench.
Upstairs are three bedrooms, where original windows lend an even greater sense of being in an incredibly sweet cottage, like something from an Avoca Handweavers’ photoshoot – and as the real thing is just down the road in Kilmacanogue, you’re not far from extra inspiration.

The house, which is for sale through Downey Property for €345,000, is at the end of the terrace, and is 89sq m (958sq ft). It really is adorable, although as the bathroom is downstairs, you might want to rejig things a little before you fully move in. No 8 is on open view this Saturday, November 15th from 11am till noon, and by appointment.
