Victorian standing tall in Donnybrook

Four-bedroom terraced house for €1.4 million

Marlborough Road in Donnybrook was developed from the early 1820s until the late 1800s. Architect and engineer Edward Carson, father of politician, barrister and judge Sir Edward Carson, designed many of the houses that run along the leafy terraces – and built a sewer at his own expense to run the entire length of the road.

In the latter years of the road's development, the Cranny family, who lived in nearby Muckross Park, were developing houses with fitted bathrooms, which in the 1880s were the epitome of luxury.

Number 67 is a mid-terrace, two-storey-over-garden Victorian property with five bathrooms. Two have been installed as en suites, in the master and second bedroom on the first floor.

At hall level, the formal reception rooms have striking cornicing and ceiling roses. The current owners, who bought the property in 1998, added extra wall mouldings, and wainscoting to lower walls in both rooms, which architectural purists may find out of character. The floors, however, are original pine and have been given a high gloss stain and have mellowed over their near two-century existence.

On the garden level, accessed via an oak-panelled stairwell, lies the kitchen and a single bedroom. A living room filled with antiques is currently used as a home office. To the rear is a bright conservatory with oak-stained maple flooring and access to the country-style garden. On the first floor, three fine-sized double bedrooms, painted in heritage colours, bring the number to four.

Having a large garage, new owners may take advantage of the vehicular access to the rear for off-street parking, as some of the neighbours have done.

While formalists may want to remove some new details that could detract from the distinctive period features, they are simple cosmetic undertakings in what is otherwise a handsome period house.

Standing at 247sq m (2,660sq ft), this fine property with some exceptional original coving is for sale through DNG with an asking price of €1.4 million.
