Dublin property developer John Byrne (below) is to come under pressure from Dublin Corporation to reinstate the long vacant restaurant on the top of O'Connell Bridge House in the centre of Dublin. Though some of the city's architectural critics would like the 12-storey block to be demolished because of its scale and height, the Kerry-born developer will be doing little more than upgrading the building when it is vacated later this year by the Department of the Environment. The Corpo is now apparently anxious to have the penthouse restaurant reopened as part of the refurbishment. It functioned for a few years after the building was completed in 1965 but when it closed down, Mr Byrne moved in himself and has since been running his Carisle Trust property empire from there. With no public access planned for the Millennium Tower due to be built in O'Connell Street, the next best thing would be to have a top class restaurant on top of O'Connell Bridge House with unrivalled views over the entire city centre. All that is needed is a high speed lift to the top.
