People in stunning glass house who have mastered throwing stone floors

THE GLASS ROOM extension to the rear of 2 Lower Albert Road is an uncompromisingly modern space

THE GLASS ROOM extension to the rear of 2 Lower Albert Road is an uncompromisingly modern space. Designed by Billings Design Associates (01-2938820) the room is made entirely of glass (at a cost of around €170,000) with a basalt tile floor that flows through to the outdoor patio.

The owner chose the textures in the room, which is either light absorbent, such as the pure wool in the fabric of the sofas, or highly polished lacquer in the bookcase.

The Poliform lacquered bookcase came from Reflexoes Light and Design Almancil, Portugal, and is big enough to house a vast literary collection. It can be sourced here through Haus (01-6706677) and costs €9,078 as can the Minotti Alison Sofas with fabric made by Scottish company Bute Fabrics.

With this level of detail even the loudspeaker must fit in with the decor. The floor-standing speakers are Bowers and Wilkins 804 supplied by Cloney Audio in Blackrock (01-2889449) and cost €3,600 for the pair.

The basalt floor was imported from Italy by the Limestone Gallery in London.

Upstairs, the bathroom off the main bedroom has a cavernous, intimate feel. The Rapsel Lavasca free-standing bath, €6,450, with a Vola wall-mounted mixer, came from Deansgrange-based FitzMawn Interiors (01-2898822) via Milan.

The Aquavision waterproof LCD TV, at €2,849.61, was supplied and fitted by Cloney Audio.

The nude over the bath is by Ben Readman, whose work is in private collections all over the world.

The floor tiles are Haruk Frig Travertine tiles which cost €86.50 per sq m from FitzMawn Interiors as were the Rustic Stone Weave crema marfil plain wall tiles at €22 per sq m.

The Duravit toilet costs €1,499 while the Geberit concealed frame cistern is €800.

Big enough for a baptism, the Spazio basin is €1,199 and Vola wall-mounted basin mixer with swivel spout cost €1,050.
